Top of the Morning, Kansas City! March, 2011
The snow and cold have been crummy, but business is
still hoppin' down here at the club. For some reason, our patrons
aren't deterred by crummy weather; rather I think it's more of a reason to
come down, listen to music, and get out of the house!
St. Patrick's Day
Kansas City is well known for its
St.Pat's festivities. Unfortunately, it is also a day of mayhem, drunk
drivers, and a general (albeit fun) state of chaos. The Phoenix is off
the beaten path of the festivities, but we'll be having fun in our own
little corner of the city - without the rowdy crowds, overpriced drinks, and
impossible parking.
Come down for some live music, homemade Guinness Stew, and fabulous drink specials on Irish Whiskey and many other festive beverages!
The Big XII Tournament & March Madness
We definitely are not a sports bar, but rest assured - if there are tight games happening (especially Big XII) - we will have them on our flat screens! Plus, the beer tastes the same and you don't have to fight for a seat...
LIVE Happy Hour
Where else do you go after work during the week to hear live music with your cocktail of choice? $3 Boulevards, $4 House Wines, and $5 Select Martinis. Come unwind with a little Danny Beal on the piano every Mon-Thur from 430-630. That, plus some half-price appetizers and drink specials are tough to beat!
ASH Wednesday and Lent
With Lent starting this week, be assured we have plenty of great dishes to eat, namely our Fish & Chips, Grilled Salmon, and Baked Tilapia. Whatever you choose to give up - don't let it be the Phoenix!
Industry Appreciation
Do you work in the service industry (bar, restaurant, hotel, theatre)? If so, you now earn a 15% discount on your tab here at the Phoenix. Just show us your employment badge and you're good to go. We know how hard you work, so it's just our way of giving back!
Cover Charge & Reservations
Reminder: Even though we have live music EVERY night, we only charge a $5 cover on Fridays and Saturdays between 5-11pm. Fridays and Saturdays are also first come first serve - we can't take reservations. On weeknights, however, give us a call a few hours in advance, and we will hold some tables for you. If you want to schedule a party or private event, go to the "Schedule Event" link, and we will be in touch with you to plan the perfect party.

Kansas City, MO 64112 Phone: (816) 221-JAZZ LIVE MUSIC Tuesday Thru Saturday Hours: 11am - 1:30am Monday - Saturday Live Music, Great Food, Best Atmosphere! Recent News and Upcoming Events The Phoenix restaurant and live jazz nightclub in Kansas City has recently re-opened. Almost as if they never missed a beat, The Phoenix is serving up great food and featuring some of the best Kansas City musicians nightly. From the Kansas City Star: |

The Phoenix History... The corner of downtown Kansas City where the Phoenix now sits used to be known as part of the Burgeoning Garment District in 1888. The Phoenix was there from the beginning, a somewhat shady hotel that was rumored to be more of a bordello than a hotel. On the first floor there was a speak-easy type saloon owned and operated by bartender Frank Valerius, and on the second floor was a "hotel" owned by Mrs. Linna Laws. The main competition for The Phoenix were the hotels Metropolitan and The Savoy. The Exchange Hotel, which went belly up long ago, still sits dejected across the street from the thriving Phoenix much like a dead soldier from a war fought long ago. Pictured Right:

The Center Holds The Phoenix has always held it's own in part because they consistently feature great Kansas City musicians on a nightly basis. While other bars in Kansas City skimp on the music budget and present boring twenty something year old accustic guitar playing "granola" new age hippies, The Phoenix keeps it real and brings in the big jazz artists. Kansas City needs to get rid of the solo accustic guitarist / vocalist guys that seem to be everywhere now and get back to hiring REAL BANDS. Get down to The Phoenix and get back to the roots of what made Kansas City a great place to live and visit. |
